Certified Equity-Centered Coaches and Leaders have studied with The Institute for Equity-Centered Coaching have completed intensive trainings programs that include training in foundational training in: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Trauma-Informed Practice, Creating Safe Spaces for Transformation, and a training is their respective certification tracks (coach and/or leader). Below are a list of competencies our certified alum have met.

1. Intentional Space
  • Explicit inclusion 
  • Emotional & psychological safety 
  • Set & maintain community agreements & expectations
2. Conset based practice
  • Consent to participate in coaching 
  • Consent is woven throughout active coaching sessions
3. Coaching Praxis
  • Clear intent in coaching approach and pathways 
  • Clear use of coaching tools
  • Understanding and application of coaching theory
4. Trauma-Informed 
  • Coach takes care to minimize chance of harm
  • Ability to recognize signs of trauma
  • Ability to coach "around" trauma, but not "through" or claiming to "treat"
  • In in active inquiry around scope of practice, refers out when needed
5. Cultural responsiveness & Equity-Centered Engagement
  • Comfortable holding space for identity themes 
  • Comfortable asking about or clarifying cultural/historical/generational themes
  • Centers and affirms clients experience 
  • Ability to engage in discussions and analyze dilemmas related to injustice, oppression, inequity, power, and influence. 
6. Client-centeredness
  • Co-creating the coaching experience with client
  • Focus on client goals and agenda - not the coaches
  • Refers clients back to their goals, values, and strategies for alignment
7. Reflexivity
  • Ability to critique one's own practice
  • Ability to critically examine ones own identity and experience to understand choices, biases, influence, limitations and power
  • Ability to communicate and contextualize that critique, and/or make other choices when appropriate

Equity-Centered Coaches have been trained to work with their clients in ways that are safe, effective, and holistic. They understand that clients have a variety of different influences, choices, contexts, and nuances in their lives that impact all of the decisions they make.

Whether they are helping clients find more fulfillment in their personal life, facilitating organizational changes, or helping someone build the business of their dreams, Equity-Centered Coaches will meet their clients where they are, hold a high standard of equity and inclusion, and help their client make informed, aligned decisions.

  • Collaboration and understanding that managing outcomes instead of people is an effective strategy for liberatory leadership.

  • In the practice of intentionally involving folks that have been historically left out of problem-solving, decision-making, and opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways.
  • Equitable hiring and separation practices, and performance reviews
